Mindfulness is not a therapy in itself, but a specific way of being with our self and the world around us. Research has evidenced that mindfulness has a beneficial therapeutic effect on both physical and mental health, as well as general well-being.
It is ‘the art of conscious living’ (Jon Kabat Zinn).
Mindfulness teaches us to focus attention, as best we can, on immediate, direct, present moment sensory experiencing, rather than ‘mindlessly’ getting lost in thoughts about the past, present or future – which is often how we experience our day to day living.
Recent research shows that some Mindfulness-Based Courses can be as effective as anti-depressants in the treatment of recurrent depression (Kuyken et al, 2010).
About the Workshop
These two linked workshop sessions offer an opportunity to develop mindful attending through the learning and practice of different mindful practices, discussion, and taught material. Guided practices (which can be downloaded) will be given in Session 1, so that they can be practiced daily in the intervening week before Session 2. Attendance is for both sessions.
