Abstract:

Snakes are one of the most diverse and widespread clades of reptiles, with approximately 3000 species found across all continents except the Antarctic. One of the factors thought to have influenced the incredible success of this clade has been the evolution of the snake-like body form, the combination of elongating the body column and the loss of limbs. There is considerable debate surrounding the origin of snakes, with the main argument concerning whether snakes evolved in either an aquatic habitat or a terrestrial burrowing habitat. In this talk I will examine the arguments being held over the origin of snakes, as well as look at some of the reasons why snakes are so successful today.

This talk is open to all.

Sherry, orange juice and water will be served.
