Welcome to Trinity Hall MCR!

“MCR” stands for “Middle Combination Room” – Trinity Hall MCR is the collective name for graduate students, fourth-year undergraduates and postdocs studying at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. This website, maintained by the MCR Committee, contains information about the college and its students, as well as news about recent and upcoming events.

  Abstract: Have you ever wondered, when using a cellphone, how your mom can hear you perfectly well, even if she is a few thousand kilometers away? Or how text messages arrive in almost no time at all? Or how you can surf the web while punting on the river Cam? In this talk, the basic principles behind wireless communication systems will be explained in very simple terms. The history of this field, born about 100 years ago, will be quickly reviewed in an attempt to show how fast it has developed. The specific tools used to study this technology will also be discussed. The talk will conclude with a more detailed explanation of one particular system found in nearly any modern wireless device (e.g., a cellphone, laptop, or satellite TV receiver), i.e., the so-called 'bit-interleaved coded modulation'
